Breaking Out of My Shell: A Business Owner's Guide for Introverts
Share
We all gotta start somewhere…
Okay, let’s get real for a second: As a business owner, one of the must-do things is getting your name out there. And yes, that means stepping out of your comfy zone (yikes, I know!) and attending events, reaching out to people, and yes, collaborating. Now, if you’re an introvert like me—trust me, I get it! But here’s the deal: it's time to start working on building your brand and making your mark. I’m going to explain why, so grab a seat and let’s dive in!
No One Knows You Exist (And That’s Okay!)
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but… nobody knows you exist yet. Womp womp. Now, don’t go crying just yet—here’s the thing: social media is awesome, but it’s not a magical fairy that automatically makes everyone know your name. (If only, right?) You can totally be successful online, but getting out there and meeting people IRL at vendor events? That’s the sweet spot. It’s like introducing yourself to your new besties. They get to see you, hear your story, and feel your vibe. And guess what? Word-of-mouth travels faster than a gossip session at a slumber party!
So, make sure you show up with your most authentic self. Chat with people like you’re already friends—trust me, they’ll feel it! People want to connect with the real you, and that’s how they’ll shop with confidence. Always remember: You want customers to know there’s a real personality behind the brand. And if you’re lucky? They’ll come running to you! But, no pressure… just make sure to welcome them with open arms!
Join Groups & Collaborate Like a Pro
Okay, let’s talk strategy. One of the things that really helped me step out of my shell (besides the whole “going-to-events” thing) was finding some cool Facebook groups to join and collabing with other amazing people who do product reviews. The key here? Pick groups that align with your product! For example, if you sell patio floor mats (I mean, who doesn’t need those?), joining a random HGTV group might not be the best fit. But if you find a group that’s specifically about “HGTV home decor finds,” bam, you’re golden.
Once you’re in your group, get active—post, connect, and make some new friends! And speaking of friends, let’s talk collabs! There are SO many ways to partner up, but one of my personal favorites is teaming up with someone (yes, even if you don’t know them!) to review your product on Instagram or TikTok.
It’s like free advertising from someone who already has an audience that trusts them. It’s fun, interactive, and lets your brand get a fresh perspective. And hey, don’t be afraid of the feedback! Public honesty is your friend, and guess what? It helps you grow!
Remember Your ‘Why’
Okay, let’s get deep for a second—what’s your why? Why did you decide to become a business owner in the first place? Was it the Instagram aesthetic? The TikTok dreams? Or was it because you had that “Aha!” moment where you realized, “I’m meant for something bigger!”
As an introvert, I know how easy it is to hit a social drought and feel like you’re running on empty. You’re engaging, posting, communicating, and sometimes it feels like you’re talking to a brick wall. But here’s the thing: this is the grind. And on those tough days when you’re doubting yourself and your business, just ask yourself: Why did I start this?
I started my business not because I was hoping to hit a million sales in one day. Nope, it was all about freedom. The freedom to be my own boss and not waste any more time waiting on someone else to tell me how to live my life. I’ve always dreamed of having my own boutique, creating something that’s mine, and making a mark on the world. And guess what? So do you! You’ve got a story, a mission, and a reason for doing this, and it’s all yours to share.
So, the next time you feel drained, overwhelmed, or ready to throw in the towel, just remember your why. You've got this, and you've got a story that needs to be told.
Keep pushing, keep growing, and most importantly—keep being YOU!- Temeka C. :)
